The following online course is available for DMV ordered, court referred or volunteer participants and can be completed at your leisure in the comfort of your home.
Certified by Driving University, this online course is DMV approved in several states and Virginia DMV approved for students age 20 and older. The course fee is $49.95.
The online course is available 24/7 and you can take the course at your leisure--you do not have to finish the entire course in one sitting.
Convenient test center locations--in most places your public library. You must present your Driving University course completion transcript and photo ID at the test center of your choice. You will then be logged onto a computer for the final test.
Your satisfaction is guaranteed! Nine of ten students pass the test on their first try. However, if you experience difficulty you may re-take the test once every 24 hours as many times as necessary to successfully complete the program.

Your certified Certificate of Completion will be mailed to you by USPS first class mail. The timely arrival of your certificate is IMPORTANT. To be on the safe side you should allow a minimum of five business days to receive your certificate. FedEx overnight delivery is available if you're in a hurry.
Per VA Law, you must be 20 or older to take the course online.
Online driver improvement courses are not approved for CDL (commercial driver's license) violations.
Not all courts allow online driver improvement. Please check with your court of jurisdiction to verify acceptance of the online class before beginning the course.
Non-Virginia residents/non VA driver's license holders ticketed in VA: click HERE, then click on VA. After you have completed the online course call 1-877-937-4846 (Mon - Fri). You will be given an access code which allows you to take the test from your home computer. You do not have to take the test at a testing center.

CERTIFICATE CODES
Your certificate will display a code explaining the reason why you are taking a driving improvement course. The codes, issued by the VA Department of Motor Vehicles, are as follows:
NCT: This code indicates you have taken the course for court referred/ticket dismissal or ticket reduction purposes. CT stands for court, the N denotes that positive points will not be applied to your driving record.
DMV: This code means that you have been ordered by the DMV to take a driving improvement course.
VOL: This is a volunteer participant code. Volunteers are eligible to receive up to five positive driving points once every two years.
INS: Some insurance companies will provide you with a discount if you take a driving improvement course.

The National Safety Council offers a defensive driver course designed to improve your driving skills and promote safe driving habits, however, unlike VA DMV approved Driving University the NSC course is not an 8-hour course, is not VA DMV approved for traffic dismissal/traffic reduction purposes, and is not VA DMV approved for point reduction purposes.
